Eastern Jet Trader Lease 1967-68

Postby JEEIII » Sat Nov 14, 2015 3:03 pm

I write the 'Lost Schemes' post on airlinercafe and come across an interesting Eastern mystery. In December 1967, Braniff began the first Jet Cargo service on the BI-Eastern South American Interchange. BI began using the newly delivered DC-8-62CF N1807 (we are still working on which 'Panagra Green' it wore) and Eastern leased a Jet Trader N4904-C from Capitol Airways and the A/C was re-registered N8740. The lease only lasted from Dec- '67-Ap. '68. From a 1968 article we found, Eastern felt leasing a DC-8F was too expensive for the amount of Cargo and apparently BI was also trying to get local traffic rights on the NY-Miami Eastern segment, so there clearly was some monstrosity between the two at the end . As you know the Interchange ended in 1969 anyways but so far there are no known photos of how N8740 looked during the lease period! Most likely it was a 'sticker' A/C but would be curious what you think?

We found this 1968 Travel World snippet article that probably is about the leased Jet Trader and clearly is showing some animosity between Eastern and BI during the final year of the 1955 South American Interchange! Supposedly BI was trying to get local traffic rights to Miami which of course Eastern fought against. Would be interesting to find out what happened after N8740 was returned to Capitol? What A/C did eastern use for Cargo in the final year of the Interchange.....

Hi John,

Yes I've been looking for info on the DC-8-54F lease for some time now. I don't have alot but I've been told there was at least one DC-8 with "Ship Eastern Air Cargo" titles.

N4905C was also leased for 65-66, but as far as i can find out operated in full CL colors.

Post 68 I would guess if they needed a plane for the interchange they could of used the 727QCs as they were in service by then.

As to the fate of N4904C/N8740:
